A Friendly Guide for First-Timers: Caring for Your Black and Gray Tanks

Welcome! If you’re a first-timer, learning to care for your black and gray tanks might seem overwhelming, but don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with simple, straightforward tips. With the right tools and knowledge, you’ll keep your plumbing system running smoothly and odor-free.

Getting Started: Must-Have Tools

Before you hit the road, make sure you have these essentials:

  • Disposable gloves: For hygienic handling of hoses.
  • A high-quality 3″ drain hose: A durable, leak-proof option.
  • A clear drain hose adapter: To see when water runs clean during rinsing.
  • Hoses: Use a white hose for fresh water and a colored hose for rinsing.

Black Tanks: Tips for Smooth Operation

  • Pre-Charge the Tank

Before use, add a few gallons of water to your black tank using your rinser or toilet. This helps waste disperse properly and prevents it from drying out and causing clogs.

    Use Poopit Treatment

Fill the toilet bowl with about 1 gallon of water (a full bowl), then pour in the recommended amount of Poopit liquid treatment. Immediately flush it into the black tank.

In hot climates or if your tank holds more than 40 gallons, repeat the process—adding an additional 2 gallons of water for improved performance.

For best results, follow the dosing instructions on the Poopit bottle. Adding more water (not more product) helps maximize effectiveness.

    Keep the Black Valve Closed

Always keep your black tank valve closed until the tank is at least two-thirds full. This allows waste to accumulate and ensures a strong, complete flush that avoids buildup.

    Rinse After Dumping

After emptying your black tank, rinse thoroughly using your RV’s built-in tank sprayer or a tank cleaning wand.

    Avoid Long-Sitting Odors

If your RV has been sitting unused and odors develop, fill the tank with water, add ½ cup of baking soda, and let it soak for a few days. Afterward, dump and treat with Poopit for a fresh reset.

    Toilet Paper Tips

Poopit is compatible with all septic-safe toilet papers. To test yours, place a square in water—it should break down within 5 minutes.

Gray Tanks: Keeping Them Fresh

When to Treat

You don’t need to treat your gray tank after every dump. If odors occur, pour 2–3 ounces of Poopit liquid into a bucket of water, then pour the mixture down the sink drain and let it sit overnight to neutralize smells and clean buildup.

Routine Treatment

For regular maintenance, treat your gray tank every third dump. Fill the sink with about 1 gallon of water, add the recommended amount of Poopit, and immediately drain it into the system.

Dealing with Grease

If you’re dealing with greasy residue, add 2–3 ounces of Blue Dawn dish soap directly to the tank to help break it down.

Leave the Valve Open?

You can leave the gray tank valve open during use, but be sure to close it a few hours before dumping. This allows gray water to accumulate, which can be used to rinse your sewer hose after dumping the black tank.

Holding Tank Do’s and Don’ts

  • Do: Always add plenty of water with Poopit to avoid clogs.
  • Don’t: Put anything in your black tank other than water, waste, toilet paper, and treatment.
  • Do: Travel with a few gallons of water in both tanks for natural agitation.
  • Don’t: Use bleach or antibacterial cleaners; they harm your system’s bacteria.
  • Do: Ensure your roof vents are clear to prevent odors.

Sensor Care

  • Rinse After Draining

    • Keep sensors clean by rinsing your tanks after every dump.
  • Agitation During Travel

    • Drive with about half a tank of water to naturally clean sensors.
  • Professional Cleaning

    • For persistent sensor issues, a professional tank cleaning service can restore accuracy.
